Culinary Team Building in a Real Commercial Kitchen

Culinary Team Building in a Real Commercial KitchenA lot of people hear “culinary team building” and think it’s simply a chef sharing a few cooking tips and everyone cooking a nice meal together. Well that’s part of it.  But real culinary team building puts the participants in more of a unique and unexpected situation: an environment they are not totally familiar with—one that excites and engages them.  Like a real commercial kitchen!

Commercial Kitchens Built from the Ground Up

At Team Building with Taste, our Atlanta and Dallas team building kitchens are built from the ground up using real commercial cooking equipment.

“It’s cool to be in a commercial kitchen because it’s not something you work with every day, said Sage Kroell, a recent team building participant and MATRIX Resources Event Planner. “Who’s got a crazy 15 burner stove in their home?  A deep fryer? A Salamander broiler?  It’s so much fun to get in there and pretend you are a chef. “

It’s a different world compared to office work that’s for sure.

According to Dan Gentile writing for Thrillist, “unless you’ve worked in a commercial kitchen, it’s hard to understand the chaotic dance of a dinner rush. Coded language, constant personality clashes, and thick-as-blood camaraderie are side dishes to every entree you’ve ever ordered.”

Gas Burners with Three Times the BTUs You Have at Home

Think gas burners with three times the BTUs you have at home, huge convection ovens, appliances with names you’ve never heard, like Robot Coupe. Blocks of butter that make the half sticks you have in your home look downright cutesy.

Under the guidance of chefs, teams are challenged to create culinary masterpieces from scratch. Strategy, creativity and communication are all crucial for the win. When the clock runs out, each team presents their creation to the judge and everyone sits down to enjoy the feast they created. Teams are judged on presentation, taste, creativity and teamwork. Prizes are awarded to the winning team.

A huge clock on the wall is a constant reminder of how much time is left to complete the masterpieces

Along the way you digest such nuggets of restaurant safety information such as:

  • Keep shirts tucked In (loose clothing overall can get caught in machinery or in a flame)
  • Closed toed shoes are essential
  • Hairnets and latex gloves please

You also learn a lot about your teammates, how they collaborate and how they handle stress. Nothing brings a team together faster than a struggle against adversity.

“Working with Team Building with Taste was fun and stimulating,” said Kroell. “A big part of the novelty was the commercial environment. Most people took to it right away. Some took charge and some just put their heads down and went to work. Either way, it was really interesting to observe the behaviors.”
