Have you been cooking more meals at home over the past few months? You’re not alone. One recent survey reported that 54% percent of us are cooking more than we did before the pandemic, and 46% are baking more. While the continued popularity of celebrity chefs and culinary competitions on TV have given rise over the years to home cooks dabbling in some elaborate meal prep, current events have necessitated a new level of kitchen focus.

Chances are, you’re feeling a little burnt out by now. You have a few successful recipes in heavy rotation, but you’re looking to shake things up a bit. The good news is, there are several simple “tricks of the trade” professional chefs use that you can start implementing in your own kitchen. They will instantly elevate your cooking style, giving you the confidence to master a new technique or at least look good trying.

Learn Chefy Tricks in Online Cooking Class

On Friday, July 17, we are hosting an online cooking class, “Five Chefy Tricks You Can Learn at Home.” It starts at 6:30 p.m. EST on Zoom, and Team Building with Taste Executive Chef Susan Fornek will be sharing a few tips to up your kitchen game. Here’s a sneak peek:

Trick #1 – There’s an art to the flip. Whether you are frying an egg or sautéing vegetables, one of the quickest ways to look like a pro is learning how to flip without using a spatula or other utensil. It takes a gentle flick of the wrist and a lot of practice.

Trick #2 – Real chefs don’t cry in the kitchen. When you are dicing or slicing an onion, no tears need to be shed. Did you know you can stick an onion in the freezer for a bit before cutting, or cut it under running water to reduce the smell and tears? Chef Susan also has a few knife skill hacks to share.

Trick #3 – Have you ever trussed a chicken? That’s chef speak for tying it up with butcher’s twine, and it makes the bird easier to handle while also helping it cook better. Butchers also tie up roast, beef tenderloin and other large meats, so it’s a good idea to know your way around some twine to get their same juicy results.

A Taste of Virtual Team Building through Cooking

While our new online cooking classes are a fun way to get a glimpse of what Team Building with Taste events are all about, it’s the engaging corporate team building and on-site culinary events that have made us famous.  We have several virtual team building cooking options while corporate travel and outings are limited, and we have gone to great lengths to make our facility safe for Atlanta team bonding in person as well (see our culinary manifesto for details). However we see you in the coming weeks and months – a virtual cooking event, an online cooking class, or on-site cooking events and corporate team building, we look forward to sharing the kitchen with you.
